How Much Sleep Do I Need?

Have you ever asked yourself that question? Or how much your newborn, teenager, or aging parents need? Well, the short answer is that everyone has a different amount. Every person requires a different amount of sleep to obtain their optimal performance level. In fact, the amount of sleep you need changes depending on how much you slept in the past. If you have gone with less sleep than you need, your body accumulates a sleep debt. A persons sleep debt just like any other debt, needs to be repaid. Therefore if you have been chronically sleep deprived, you may need 9 hours of sleep to feel rested until the sleep debt is paid. Once the debt is paid, you may only need 7.5-8 hours to have the same feeling.

The attached chart gives you an idea of the average amount recommended for your age group. But in each group there are variations. Please note that these are recommendations and you should consult your physician with any questions regarding your specific sleep needs.
