Posted on 22 Oct 2011 - 8:25 PM by D. Buckley

The Sleep Doctors have another great show coming up this week—we’re going to discuss reasons why people can’t sleep. There are a variety of causes, some which are easy to identify and others that may surprise you. And Dr. Steven Silas, a board-certified Sleep Medicine physician in the Cool Springs (Franklin/Brentwood) area, will be our special guest.  Tune in and call in with your sleep questions!

This week we’re talking about things that may prevent sleep. In line with our show topic, we’re introducing a new poll question.  Weigh in this week!

Poll Question: How many times per week do you have trouble falling asleep?

Sleep in the News

As you may know there are many factors that prevent us from going to sleep, but in this report from WebMD, there are some that you may not even consider.

6 Surprising Sleep Wreckers

With our guest Dr. Steven Silas, we’ll discuss the many stressors that cause insomnia.  Call in to tell us what keeps you awake at night.

Did you know that Charles Dickens was as insomniac who felt his best chance of getting to sleep was to lay in the center of a bed that was facing north?

Snoring by a bed partner can definitely keep us awake.  Did you know that the loudest snores recorded in Guiness World Records was 93 decibels (120db is a jet engine) by Kare Walkert of Kumla, Sweden, in 1993?

We’ll also discuss an article on Shine from Yahoo! about some of the nightly routines that need to be addressed.  Check out the full article to see if you are guilty of any of these.

4 Things Keeping You Up at Night…and How to Fix Them

We’ll talk about the main things to look for in diagnosing a sleep issue: Snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, daytime fatigue, kicking, memory issues, dry mouth or headache in the morning, tossing and turning, waking up to gasping sensation or a racing heart, and poor sleep quality.  You can research these symptoms in our Disorders & Symptoms section of our website.

We’ll also talk about treatment options for sleep disorders including technological advances and treatment choices. And we’ll answer the big questions on your mind including:

  • What choices do I have for a sleep disorder?
  • What happens if I don’t do anything?

Sleep Doctors Sentence Completion

The Sleep Doctors will also play our exciting Sentence Completion game.  Here’s how it works: The Sleep Doctors will start a sentence, and you, our listeners will call in and complete it. It’s that simple!  We’re gonna give away Sleep Doctors Gift Packs to the first three callers who respond, so think about your answer to the following question and then call in during the show to 615-737-WWTN (615-737-9986) or toll free at 866-SLEEP20 (866-753-3720) if you are outside the Nashville area. Here is the question:

The thing that keeps me from falling asleep the most is ______.

It’s going to be a great show!  Tune in, call in and weigh in!  We want to hear from you!
