This week the Sleep Doctors are talking about sleep and aging.  As we get older do we need more or less sleep?  What kind of sleep problems arise as we get older?  When should we seek medical advice?  We’ll talk about all of these and more.  Tune in and call in Sunday morning at 9am!

The Sleep Doctors have been talking about how different groups of people are impacted by sleep disorders.  Recently, we have discussed how men and women are different with respect to sleep, and we’ve discussed how kids are different from adults. But what happens to our sleep as we get older? One of the most commonly held beliefs is that we need less sleep as we get older. Is this true?  The answer is no!  The sleep doctors will discuss how our need for sleep does not decrease but our ability to sleep well does.

WebMD reports the top 4 reasons that sleep gets worse as we get older are:

  • Poor sleep habits and patterns
  • Medications
  • Psycological Distress or Psychiatric Disorders
  • Sleep Disorders

Sleeping and Aging

So what types of things are commonly seen in the older adult group with regard to their sleep? Well a whole long list of symptoms, according to eMedicine Health.  Among them are:

  • Feeling tired (fatigue)
  • Difficulty concentrating or paying attention
  • Not feeling rested
  • Unable to go to sleep
  • Taking a long time to go to sleep at night
  • Frequent awakening at night
  • Unable to go back to sleep after awakening
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Sleep apnea may cause symptoms in addition to those already named.
  • Morning headaches
  • Wake up confused
  • Snoring
  • Wake up gasping for breath
