Posted on 12 Aug 2011 - 4:23 PM by Dr. Brian Wind

Dennis Buckley, a board-certified polysomnographic technologist and the Director of Medical Education for the Sleep Centers of Middle Tennessee, will fill in for Dr. Wind this week with Dr. Noah.  We’ll be talking with Dan Zimmerle of SuperTalk’s One Nation Under God radio show in studio.  We treated him for his sleep apnea and now he (and his wife) are big fans of the Sleep Doctors!

Sleep in the News

This week we’re talking about untreated sleep apnea and the risk for dementia.  Medicine.net reports that the risk of dementia could be greater for elderly women who have untreated sleep apnea. The study found that elderly women who began the study without dementia had 85% higher odds of developing mild cognitive impairment or dementia.  The full article can be found at:

Sleep Apnea Could Up Risk of Dementia In Elderly Women

Another important issue is that the symptoms associated with Sleep Apnea—particularly the cardiovascular system—return quickly when treatment is discontinued. Yahoo News ran an article about a Swiss study which reported a return of symptoms in just two weeks.  Read the full article at the following link:

Sleep Apnea Makes Quick Return When Treatment Stops

We’ll also be talking about common problems and solutions for adapting to CPAP treatment such exhalation issues, nasal dryness, mask leaks, and mask discomfort.  We’ll also talk about what happens if CPAP isn’t for you. Here’s some information to consider about OSA and CPAP:
